Contemporary Pavilions to a Heritage Listed House

Location
Concord West
GFA
200 sq m
Status

Completed

The site of this heritage listed property falls away from the street such that the previous non sympathetic rear additions were located about 1.5 metres above ground with steps to the garden. The slope allowed for an interesting internal and external solution maintaining the heritage significance of the 1920’s house. Internally the house steps down half way to a kitchen and laundry section with a roof lower than the undisturbed original roof allowing for a link to the living room pavilion at another lower level. The living room pavilion has a contemporary pyramid roof which because of the ground height variance cannot be seen from the street. This pyramid form is repeated in an outdoor entertaining pavilion on an adjacent terrace with an outdoor kitchen. The relationship from the living room to the landscaped rear gardens is accentuated by the high ceiling and tall glass doors. The balance of traditional detailing in the original part of the house with the contemporary additions allows for an appreciation of both new and old.
