Converting the house from a 1970’s project house to 2 dwellings meant a massive makeover. The main house is for a small family and the second attached dwelling is for their parents. The building is divided into 4 parts alternatively black and white, with the black sections having large overhanging gables onto outside terraces. Internally accentuated by a simple colour scheme, the spaces are varied from soaring heights to low levels. 2 of the 4 parts have high sloped ceilings combined with low dropped bulkheads as contrast. A variety of external materials have been used on the walls – metal cladding, stone cladding and painted render – all working to define the 4 parts of the building. The property includes significant gardens and the interiors throughout relate to the exterior by way of large openings – including many doors sliding away into cavity walls to maximise the sense of bringing the outdoors inside. The parents’ dwelling is privately situated from the main house – but together both dwellings open on to a shared courtyard. The significant change from the original building has made the building into an ideal multi generational home.
